* I wonder if these predatory journals, combined with the profits of the
big commercial publishers, and the fees of $37.53 to read a 2 paragraph
note published in 1943, don't combine to suggest a new model of
scientific publishing?

With the internet, I don't see why any study couldn't be posted in a
blog by its authors, both as straight text and as a pdf, and reviews
solicited from both known colleagues and via mailing lists. The reviews
would be entered as comments on the blog, and then the ms revised in
accordance with them, and then reposted as published.

Societies or departments could host these blogs, with minimal oversight,
or individuals could have their own. This would transfer the
responsibility for revision from an editor to the author(s). Published
pdfs would be collected by libraries and individuals, and posted in
sites like Researchgate, and then traded around among individuals.

I've sort of done this with a couple of papers...

...and I think I'm triggered now to put a publications section in our
website.

The dreadful loss academia would suffer from this would be the absence
of any status of the journals works are published in, so tenure and
promotion committees would have - gasp! - to read and evaluate the
publications of their candidates, rather than depending on the status of
the journals the works are in.
