I am not particularly impressed from what I have seen on this website. This seems to be mainly - from what I have seen - about commo names. Scientific names also get increasingly criticized as being harmful in cases. A paper countering such tendencies and pleading for nomenclatural stability has just been published (after having been rejected by several leading journals, of course):
https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.researchgate.net%2Fpublication%2F381547435_Protecting_stable_biological_nomenclatural_systems_enables_universal_communication_A_collective_international_appeal&data%7C02%7Ctaxacom%40lists.ku.edu%7Cc4d0ba60be944d07e58608dc93ff8a72%7C3c176536afe643f5b96636feabbe3c1a%7C0%7C0%7C638547972955941657%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=%2B4YT%2Bi5t1prV6aG3vdX7Ih4tkQH3qfJBbO31l5qnXGE%3D&reserved=0
We got support from over 1500 colleagues from about 100 countries. It has been on ResearchGate as a pre-print for several months, but now it is properly published.
Cheers

Frank

Subject: Taxacom: Botannica Tirannica ? Giselle Beiguelman

This is a most depressing exhibition and website. So far I have only looked at the website, but I will have a chance to visit the installation here in Toronto this summer.

Frankly, I don't know where to start in responding to it, or to whom.
Has anyone on the list already encountered the exhibition, say in Brazil or Italy? Have a look at the long, multi-part curatorial statement. It's as if the author lives in a world to which science has contributed nothing positive, and imperialism has only ever been practiced by Europeans. The author seems to revel in the antisemitic, racist, and sexist tropes used in common names that they have discovered.

I don't see why botanists (who comprise people of many genders, skin colors, ethnicities, and religions) should have to answer for sins that too many people would commit if they had the opportunity to do so, denigrating the other, construing circumstances in their favor, and taking what isn't theirs. These things should be attacked directly, as capitalism (exploitation of others), or religious chauvinism (the Christian roots of antisemitism), or the unfairness of gender stereotypes.
