Taxacom: Question regarding priority of 2 family-group names in Cnidaria

Tony:

Yes, in zoology, the Principle of Priority operates on family-group names in the same way as it operates for genus-group and species-group names.

Acanthogorgiidae Gray, 1859 (type genus *Acanthogorgia* Gray, 1857) takes precedence over (= is the senior synonym of) Paramuriceidae Bayer, 1956 (type genus *Paramuricea* K?lliker, 1865) when these names denote the same nominal taxon, unless the ICZN has ruled otherwise.

Subject: Re: Taxacom: Question regarding priority of 2 family-group names in Cnidaria

So far as I can see, the relevant portion of the ICZN Code is this:

23.3. *Application to Synonymy*

The Principle of Priority requires that a taxon formed by bringing together into a single taxon at one rank two or more previously established nominal taxa within the family group, genus group or species group takes as its valid name the name determined in accordance with the Principle of Priority [Art. 23.1] and its Purpose [Art. 23.2] , with change of suffix if required in the case of a family-group name [Art. 34].

*Example.* The valid name of a genus formed by the union of the genera
*Aus* 1850
and *Cus* 1870, and the subgenus *Bus* 1800 (transferred from the genus
*Xus* 1758), is *Bus* 1800.
So, can I re-phrase the question: is there any reason why an enlarged (aka
synonymized) family that includes both the types of previous families Paramuriceidae Bayer, 1956 and with Acanthogorgiidae Gray, 1859 should take the later name (Paramuriceidae) and not the earlier one (Acanthogorgiidae)?
If there is no reason according to the Code (and in fact such a choice is in contravention of it), I can inform the relevant person responsible for both the paper in which this is asserted, and the maintenance of the relevant sector of WoRMS by which this information is disemminated further.

Thanks in advance - Tony
