Taxacom: question on taxonomic authority

The name resulting from a change in rank is sometimes called a "nomen translatum", but, as Thomas said, such a change does not constitute a nomenclatural act under ICZN4. In the World Register of Marine Species, "superseded rank" is one of the reasons one can state for a name not being the current name.

Changing the taxon Taenioides cirratus (Blyth, 1860) from species to subspecies is a change in rank, which is sometimes given as "stat. nov." [i.e., status novum]. It is not a nomenclatural act but a taxonomic opinion (as Adam just mentioned).
