Understanding Copyright is, to quote Churchill, 'A riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma'.

I recall hearing from a copyright lawyers presentation at a meeting which was part of an EU project sometime towards the end of the last century. He stated that in one EU Country if one purchased a reproduction of a copyrighted work of art (a picture) and permitted anyone else to look at it (including members of your family) you would be breaking the law and likely to be fined (or more).

I did use Hathi Trust not infrequently when I was 'working' (I retired in 2014) and I used a little bit of free software, which linked to a VPN, and permitted me to pretend I was digitally based in the USA, rather than the UK, and this unlocked access to almost everything.

Actually, maybe as someone based in US academia you might be able to explain to me (very briefly!) just WHO actually DOES have access to the stuff on the HT website. I find it quite extraordinary that publications from, say, 1920s and 1930s Germany (I have a particular one in mind - *Mitteilungen aus dem Institut fu?r allgemeine Botanik in Hamburg*) are NOT available to Germans because an American website says, "it's copyrighted".
