I have a hate-hate relationship with the Hathi Trust - I'll see if my
wif'es Harvard associate staff status is enough to gain access.

Actually, maybe as someone based in US academia you might be able to
explain to me (very briefly!) just WHO actually DOES have access to the
stuff on the HT website. I find it quite extraordinary that publications
from, say, 1920s and 1930s Germany (I have a particular one in mind -
*Mitteilungen
aus dem Institut fu?r allgemeine Botanik in Hamburg*) are NOT available to
Germans because an American website says, "it's copyrighted".
