Taxacom: The type of Kallymenia J. Agardh (Cryptonemiales, Rhodophyta)

In describing the new genus Kallymenia, Agardh (Alg. mar. Med. et Adria.:
98-9. 1842) included K. requienii and K. reniformis without selecting a
generitype.

Subsequently, Montagne (Flore d'Algerie: 112-3. 1846, as Callymenia)
recorded *both* species and provided accounts including references to
previous publications and illustrations for *both*.

However, under his generic description of [K]allymenia, Montagne cited only
his illustration of K. requienii (showing the type of sporangial division
described).

This genus/species association is analogous to Schmitz's (in Flora 72:
435-456. 1889), who cited single species under the red algal genera, noting
in the introduction of his work that these are the 'typische Species'.

Although Montagne applied the term 'type' to signify the autonym (Montagne
l.c.: 68, 'le type et non la var..'), his citation only of K. requenii
under the genus Kallymenia should be interpreted as selection of the
typical species.

This is supported comparing to Montagne's treatment of other genera, in the
same publication, where several representative species are generally cited
under genera including more than one species.

Art. 7.11. accepts as type designation 'an equivalent' to the word type,
and Montagne's citation of a single species under Kallymenia is analogous
to that of Schmitz (1889) and should be accepted as an (earlier)
typification (Athanasiadis Phyc.Eur.Rhod.: 649. 2016).

The above is a comment to a statement concerning the type of Kallymenia
made in Notulae algarum No. 76 (26 September 2018) and also affects the
generitype of other genera of Kallymeniaceae.
