Dear Frank,
If you would like to understand, then start by reading the wiki. It
provides more than enough substance for "understanding" with whom you
choose to associate.
On the other hand, you have a long history as an editor for big publishers,
right? You have worked with them for positive outputs such as
ZooCode-compliant e-publication. But there are some "practices" that may
appear acceptable to you and that are not acceptable to others. That
includes questionable publishing practices and questionable profit margins.
All big publishers are "predatory" as far as they inflate their prices,
have abhorrent profit margins, sometimes higher than oil companies, set a
rate of inflationary prices of 5% annually over a university sector that
grows 1% annually, and above all utilize the logically fallacious impact
factors to inflate their pricing and milk more money from an already
underfunded sector. Even large European institutions like Senckenberg
struggle to pay to those publishers, either for reading access or for open
access publishing. All the money comes from one pocket, and losing more to
the publisher's greed means that there is less for everything else.
Did you ever stop to think that "some" publishers are all predatory because
of their greed and that they affect us all? Probably not. Otherwise you
would have just stopped editing for those publishers. Times have changed,
Frank. It's time to do better and bring publishing back to academia. And
the change starts with each of us and our individual actions. Actions, for
example, like not putting impact factors in a prominent place to continue
hooking authors through them, like your MDPI Diversity does. Actions, for
example, like signing the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment,
either individually or as a journal board. Actions, finally, like not
publishing, reviewing, or editing for abusive publishers.
One thing is sure: There are many willing to do better and to bow no more
to publishers' greed and journal impact factors. This year German funding
agencies took decisive steps away from impact factors and towards better
evaluation of research outputs.

I wonder what your actions would be. One can always hope for the best.
Cheers,
Carlos
