[Taxacom] R: type material and manuscript name

Dear Fabio,
I assume that this is a zoological question, not botany.

I also assume that you have a relatively old description, Fabio, perhaps
from before 1900, when it was usual practice to attribute names to
manuscript authors.

If so, then the authorship follows Art. 50.1.1 ICZN Code. The authorship
must be attributed to the author of the work (so, to AA). Except that
the name and the criteria of making the name available (i.e., the
description) were both attributed to a different author. You said that a
description was present, so this description would count here. If the
description was not explicitly attributed to BB (I understood that the
description was not attributed to BB), then the authorship must be
attributed to AA alone, with no mention of BB in any form.

So the name would be XY AA.

Now the types. Just adding "BB ms." behind the name does not necessarily
mean that AA really saw that material of BB's collection. Only if the
original source gives a clear statement that the material in BB's
collection was actually seen and analysed, then BB's material would be
part of the type series. Or if something else suggested that BB's
material was anylsed by AA, before the date of finishing the manuscript.
In such a case, and if there were different species deposited in AA's
and BB's collections, it would be necessary to select a lectotype.

Hope this helps. Best wishes
Francisco
