[Taxacom] Validity of species/subspecies

Note that it helps to be careful with terminology, as in
"valid species":

* under the ICNafp, all species names are valid, by definition
(if it has not been validly published, it is not a name).
* under the ICZN, a species name is valid if it is the correct
name to use, for a species with that circumscription and
   position.
* whether or not something is a "valid species", is a matter
   of taxonomy, not of nomenclature.

Subject: [Taxacom] Validity of species/subspecies

> Dear Taxacomers,

> different enough from species *Xx xx* to deserve full specific status, and
> therefore named it *Xx zz**. *Note that, instead of elevating subspecies *Xx
> xx yy* to the species rank (i.e. *Xx yy*), the author gave it a new
> specific epithet (i.e. *Xx zz*). Here is the question: is *Xx zz *a valid
> species? Or should the subspecies *yy* have priority as the specific
