Dear Collectors and Collection Managers,

        Dave Kavanaugh of the California Academy of Sciences I are
undertaking
a revision of taxa attributed to the North American subgenus Hypherpes
Chaudoir (Carabidae: Pterostichini: Pterostichus Bonelli). The first
step in this work will be to assess existing material. I will be happy
to receive any specimens on loan. You may to send them to me at the
address below.

        Because of the extremely large number of specimens of
Pterostichus spp.
in collections we will generally not be able to sort large numbers of
specimens identified only as belonging to Pterostichus or Pterostichini.
You can tentative place individuals by using Yves Bousquet's excellent
work on Nearctic Pterostichini (Bousquet, Y. 1999. Supraspecific
classification of the Nearctic Pterostichini. Fabreries. Supplement 9.).
Based on Yves' key, Nearctic specimens with the following character
states would be Hypherpes species:

Pterostichus specimens from NORTH AMERICA;
Third elytral interval WITHOUT setigerous punctures;
Antennomere 1 SHORTER than 2+3;
Glossal sclerite with ONE pair of anterior setae;
Metepisternum subquadrate, flight wings REDUCED;
Seta of middle trochanter PRESENT;
Elytra 7th intervals NOT carinate;

This is sufficient for individuals from in or West of the Rocky
Mountains. For any specimens with this combination of characteristics
from East of the Rocky Mountains they must also have the seta of the
hind trochanter PRESENT and transverse or linear elytral microsculpture
(two species from the east, P. adoxus and P. tristis).

        We are interested in both pin-mounted specimens and 90% or
higher EtOH
preserved specimens (suitable for DNA extraction).

        Please e-mail me before you send specimens.
