Mayr lives!

So far as I know (as an alumnus of Mayr's evolution seminar and the MCZ),
Ernst Mayr is still going strong in his mid-90s, and still producing a book
every couple of years.

If he has passed on, it happened very, very recently.

ANIMAL SPECIES AND EVOLUTION (Mayr 1963) is in my opinion the most
important book on evolution since ORIGIN OF SPECIES, and Mayr the
pre-eminent evolutionary biologist of the century.
