Taxacom: Cyclura

OK - have had time to review a phylogeography paper on Cyclura. Quite
interesting. The 'basal' monotypic clade is pinguis on a small island east
of Puerto Rico (which appears to have no endemic Cyclura). Sister clade
rangines from Mona Island (west of Puerto Rico) to Bahamas, Greater
Antilles, Jamaica, and Cyamans (which happen to run along a major fault
zone). This group diverges into a reciprocally allopatric clade in the east
(Hispaniola, Turks, Mona Island), and west (central bahamas, Cuba, Jamica,
Caymans).

In the eastern clade there is a sister species for Turks &
Caicos-Hispaniola and Mona Island-Hispaniola. This supports range expansion
in the region of Hispaniola for overlap of its two species.

Western Clade - basal species in Jamaica! (collei). Next clade with one
group in central Bahamas sister to group with basal clade in Grand Cayman!
Next clade with two groups, western with Little Cayman-Cuba, and
Andros-Exumas (Bahamas). So, interesting thing here is not only
allopatry of most species, but also allopatry of higher clades! Of course
chance dispersal did all this.

Cheers, John
