Taxacom: mdpi soliciting

"For free"! Congratulations, John, this means that some people out there think your papers would enhance their journal. Free means you don't have to pay the APC funds. I'm always happy to get a waiver of open access payment because open access is the only real way to get people to actually read one's stuff, cherish it, print it out and scribble notes in the margins.

I've seen good books published by good authors with good publishers on topics of immense interest, and they cost US$250 to 300, nowadays. Who reads these? You either can't afford them or mark your thoughts in them if they are library books and who goes to a library except maybe once a month to browse the journals?

We authors are in a squeeze, needing open access publication but unless your academic outfit is rich, you gotta pay the APC yourself or sell your copyright to the Devil. "For free!" is a marvel, given that the new publication model is still too new.

Although MDPI seems like a franchising house with some of its myriad journals being amateurish and somewhat venal, the ones that I have gone to are fully professional and the reviewers are genuine. (I just got one of my papers raked over the coals by a disgustingly intelligent and knowledgeable reviewer for the journal Sustainability. If I fix it up, apparently, I will get it published although I will need a second mortgage for the APC. :))

There are poison journal publishers, though. Crimson Publications is one, and others are whistle-blown on a Web site. For these, yes, use your email filter, otherwise feel complimented.

Subject: Taxacom: mdpi soliciting

By coincidence in reference to my recent comment about mdpi nuisance, here
is another:

Dear Dr. Grehan,

A few weeks ago, we invited you to submit a paper *for free*, either a
comprehensive review or an original research article, to Insects. The
detailed email is as follows.

Could you please let us know if you are interested in this offer? If so,
please provide the tentative title or abstract to me(mona.liu at mdpi.com)
in advance. I would be delighted to provide you with guidance on how to
fully prepare it and where to submit it. The submission time is
flexible. If you need more time, please feel free to let me know.

We look forward to your reply.

To which I responded

"Not interested. And no more soliciting articles from mdpi"

We'll see if that is blunt enough.
