Taxacom: FW: specimen parcel stopped by US customs

Hi John,
Any package from abroad containing "wildlife" needs an approved form 3-177, best before it is even sent to the US. This is the Declaration for Importation or Exportation of Fish or Wildlife.
You can file these forms online (my collections manager does this fortunately, so I don't have the URL), but we never have problems to get these approved. Specimens coming in without such form on file either slip through (90%), or get confiscated or returned.
We never try the "slip through" approach. That's probably why we are in good standing with USFWS.
Cheers

Frank

Subject: Taxacom: specimen parcel stopped by US customs

I would be interested to receive any comment regarding a recent situation where a parcel of some insect specimens from Paraguay that was stopped by customs and returned. I was only able to find out about this through the efforts of a local congressman's office (and even then it took two attempts to get an answer). The office was informed that the parcel lacked a permit and certificate. I have no idea of what they might be (and of course in its usual helpful way the government bureaucracy declined to elaborate). I would be interested to hear from any US researcher who might know what was being referred to here in this instance.

Thanks,

John Grehan
