Taxacom: beetle nomenclature - Scolytidae or Scolytinae

In my younger days I learned that ambrosia bark beetles were in the family
Scolytidae (at least I think I did), but see now reference to it as a
subfamily Scolytinae under Curculionidae. Anyone up to date with this group
who could comment on relevant status and for how long either way?

Thanks, John
