Apologies if this question has been asked before...
I am seeking advice on the correct formation of a family-group name in
zoology where the type genus ends in -ops - the example before me
being Gorgonop[s]idae Lydekker, 1890, a family of fossil reptiles, based on
the genus Gorgonops Owen, 1876.
Benton, 1992 used the spelling Gorgonopsidae for this family, while
presently the PBDB uses Gorgonopidae, noting Gorgonopsidae as an
alternative spelling. PBDB's usage appears to originate from a 1979 work
by Sigogneau-Russell, in which she uses Gorgonopidae for the family name,
but (confusingly) Gorgonopsinae for the nominate subfamily (a form of name
also in use in PBDB at this time).
I had a quick look at the relevant (?) article 29 "Family group names" in
the ICZN Code Online, but did not find anything directly relevant to this
situation (although may have missed something of course). Can any better
qualified Taxacomers advise?
Thanks in advance - Tony
