(I have had problems with some MDPI journals in the reviewing/proofs process [as said in other emails in this thread ? they often do not send reviewer comments along if the publishers deems them ?minor? [for review they send out typeset mss ready to be published, btw] -- but would not list them as purely ?predatory?)

But publishers thus invest a lot in these marketing strategies to increase the number of papers submitted a

Both MDPI and Frontiers are clearly only there to make profit as evidenced by their exorbitant APC (open access fees of over $2000). Other more scholarly open-access journals do not engage in this marketing style and have much lower open-access fees (e.g., Magnolia Press, PeerJ, Pensoft journals) and some are free to authors AND readers (Diamond Open Access)

So why should we support publishers' excessive profits as editors (maybe we get paid), reviewers and authors (we pay)? Why do our institutions not seek "value for money"; we have to get multiple quotes and use "preferred suppliers" for everything else except open-access fees where the publisher choose the price? A limit on open-access fees by institutions and funding agencies would be a start.
Apart from the cost, another reason to avoid journals with variable/light peer-review quality is that peers will view your work as less scholarly, as evident from some of the recent emails on Taxacom. Maybe not an issue for people who actually read the paper but perhaps for future employers judging your CV.

Even that has its difficulties; MDPI is a proverbial myriapod, and it is pretty near impossible to judge any one "leg" because of problems with another. That is, while it is certainly a red flag when a large number of editors for a specific journal resign in protest, extrapolating from that to *other* MDPI journals, or the MDPI administration, requires more evidence - you can certainly be suspicious, that's just being prudent, and some of the controversies have been pretty significant, but you can't just jump to the conclusion that there is something fundamentally and systematically wrong. That being said, what I find concerning is how the administration has responded in most of these controversies, because it has NOT generally demonstrated a firm grasp of accountability or responsibility. You can only downplay such things just so much before people start questioning your integrity.
These are good questions to ask, and good things to keep in mind, moving forward.
