Hm, let me see if I get this correct.? According to Adam Smith, the
invisible hand will direct results to a mutually agreeable price for
product.? If you have, say, a faculty member who is a mediocre
researcher burdened by a heavy teaching load that wants tenure or
promotion, and they are working in a system that states right out in the
open that numbers of papers published in open access journals with
certain rating characteristics will be used to evaluate that person, the
invisible hand will direct that faculty member to place value on getting
their paper in a qualifying journal.? Value is money.? The invisible
hand, in such a situation, will produce a product to buy with that money
and a price will be agreed to by the purchaser and producer through
market exchange.? Presumably, the worse the paper, the higher the price
to place it in a qualifying journal would be the agreed exchange.? I see
nothing nefarious or unexpected by this.
If there is a guilty party, it is the system that makes the criteria,
not the poor smuck trying to get tenure nor the publisher who helps them
for a fee.
The only surprise by all of this is that the capitalistic solution is
coming from a communist country!
Don't attack the publisher or the author, it is not their fault.
