Dear Taxacomers,
The genus Galea Meyen, 1833 (Caviidae) is presently treated as an accepted
genus, see e.g. Wilson & Reeder, 1995 (
https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.departments.bucknell.edu%2Fbiology%2Fresources%2Fmsw3%2Fbrowse.asp%3Fid%3D13400189&data%7C01%7Ctaxacom%40lists.ku.edu%7Cccb818f6a4c247d17e1608dad30a707f%7C3c176536afe643f5b96636feabbe3c1a%7C0%7C0%7C638054339501799214%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=EGdSkyljrN1K%2B%2B70XhFA3OSHCQUz1geVVJh4Lb2QUQc%3D&reserved=0)
and elsewhere. On the other hand Kretzoi & Kretzoi, 2000 considered that it
was preoccupied (by Galea Meuschen 1787, an echinoderm) and proposed the
replacement name Galecavia, a name that never seems to have been taken up.
The statement regarding the preoccupation of other, later instances of
Galea by Meuschen's (1787) name has been repeated elsewhere as well, e.g.
in the dinoflagellate literature, regarding Galea Kristan, 1957.
Galea Meuschen 1787 does not appear in the Echinoid Directory hosted at the
NHM, London, but Galea Smith, 1817 does (

a name not listed in Nomenclator Zoologicus, which has the following
entries, sorted chronologically:
name author publication category comments
Galea Meuschen 1787 Mus. Gever., 486. Echin
Galea Cuvier 1817 R?gne anim., 4, 18; Smith 1817, ``Obs. Echini'' in Strat.
Syst. Org. Foss.; Quenstedt 1874, Petref. Dtschl., (1) 3, 585. Echin (ex
Klein)
Galea Meyen 1833 Nova Acta Acad. Caes. Leop. Carol., 16 (2), 597. Mamm
Galea Moerch 1852 Cat. Yoldi, 1, 110. Moll (ex Klein)
Galea Kristan 1957 Jb. geol. Bundesanst. Wien 100: 291. Prot (Rhiz.)
Galea Maier 1959 Neues Jb. Geol. Pal?ont. Abh. 107 (3): 305. Prot (Mast.)
I have a suspicion that Galea Meuschen may occur in a work declared
unavailable by the ICZN, but am not sure... but do not know whether Galea
Meyen, 1833 is really preoccupied or not; if it is, then Kretzoi &
Kretzoi's 2000 replacement name Galecavia should apply, except that no
recent works seem to use it...
Any thoughts/assistance welcome!
