Taxacom: old journals

There are know issues around the PDFs (particularly plates) in that the digitized resolution would sometimes get wonky for a plate when it was merged into the PDF. Both because of the added compression layer as well as dimension fudging. This is often true of the generated PDF as well as the whole item PDF. The problem also varies on the PDF conversion date.

Downloading the JPEG 2000 file will always get you the highest quality image that we have available.

External Email - Exercise Caution

Regarding the quality of some BHL scans:

I have found in several cases that the plates of some older works were particularly bad when the whole work was downloaded. However, when the plates alone were selected and downloaded they were then of high quality. I simply replaced the poor plates with the high quality ones. ?

Maybe not a bad idea to dump journal hardcopies that are freely available in places such as the Biodiversity Heritage Library (the Canadian Journal of Zoology is not!). If not, donate the journal so some library ? maybe they have space.

However, you may want to check the status of your journal in BHL: some of their scans are rather low quality and many of them have rather bad OCR ? so likely many of them have to be re-scanned or re-processed.

If you have spare money, donate some money to BHL or include them in your beneficiary list of your retirement account or will (which is what I have done).

Today the Canadian Journal of Zoology dating back to the 1960s were assigned to this doom.
