THANK YOU all those replied with suggestions. I am going to write up some instructions on how to fix the problem without leaving Excel. There are two keys to the process a) the Text to Columns tool built into Excel and b) knowing that the hidden character is (non-breaking space, Unicode a0, apparently also designatable as U+00A0). In Microsoft, one uses Alt +00A0, Alt 0160, or Alt 255.  

I really appreciate all the help, as will the students whose spreadsheets can now be made useful without resorting to brute force. I shall post the instructions once they are completed.
