On 13th March 2020, Dr. Jose María Gabriel y Galán, one of the most
important pteridologist of the Iberian Peninsula passed away unexpectedly.
Jose María always kept a close connection to teaching while developing
his research work, first at the Alfonso X el Sabio University and later
in the Botany Unit of the Faculty of Biology of the Complutense
University of Madrid (Spain). His deep botanical vocation was directed
towards the world of ferns, where he excelled in various Polypodiopsida
groups and contributed to the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group.
His colleagues and students will always remember him as a a great
professional, a better friend and an extraordinary teacher, always
concerned with offering the best of himself to all of the people who had
the chance of meeting him.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
