[Taxacom] OSTP request for information on Public Access to Peer-Reviewed Scholarly Publications, Data and Code Resulting From US Federally Funded Research

Tom,I'm not claiming that there are no benefits to anyone (other than $$$ to some) from universal OA! Even I would benefit from greater access to the literature. But I'm looking at the big picture, i.e. the overall cost-benefit analysis. The costs in the long term to the public purse potentially runs into the $billions, $trillions even. The benefits are ... um ... "modest", to say the least!Cheers, Stephen

Being an ol' retired fart with no academic connections I sometimes wish
I had better access to the botanical literature, especially recent
papers that might explain why this or that genus was split out, or
merged into, some other genus.  Some of the older papers I can find on
Biodiversity Heritage Library, of course.  Other times I get lucky and
can see the paper in my free JSTOR account. Very rarely I can go to an
author's personal web site and see the paper.  But a good part of the
time, I'm stuck and cannot see the paper.  This rankles a bit because
the authors' salaries and possibly their research grant was paid for by
some taxpayer's money, if not mine.   So here's one data point about a
member of the public who could reap some understanding about science if
there were public access to peer-reviewed scholarly publications.  Puny
I know, but there it is.
