We like to announce the opportunity for a three-year postdoctoral position in the Asterales Research Group at the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin, Freie Universitaet Berlin, Germany:

Research Assistant (Postdoc) Mattfeld-Quadbeck (m/f/d) full-time job limited to 3 years; salary E 13 TV-L FU; reference code: BGBM MQ 2019

The Botanischer Garten und Botanisches Museum Berlin (BGBM) is one of the world's leading institutions with a research
focus on plant taxonomy and biodiversity. With extensive herbarium and living plant collections, one among several focal
areas addresses plant diversity in the Euro-Mediterranean region.
The institution is working towards an improved integration of molecular and morphological approaches in plant systematics,
especially with the aim of improving the quality of monographic work and of accelerating the assessment of species diversity,
as a scientific basis for plant conservation. With funding from the Mattfeld-Quadbeck foundation, a research curatorship is
opened to work with botanical collections by using modern evolutionary research methods.

Job description:
The successful applicant is expected to work at the BGBM, Germany. She/He will be part of the BGBM's Research Group Asterales and work in projects studying the diversity and evolution of exemplar taxa such as Asteraceae, with a focus on the East Mediterranean and adjacent regions. The candidate's duties will range from phylogenetic analyses, optimizing taxonomic workflows and generating and supporting taxonomic treatments using the biodiversity informatics technologies developed at the BGBM ("EDIT Platform for Cybertaxonomy"). Work will include active interaction with international partners in particular in Greece in the context of the collaborative Flora of Greece Project and travelling to field sites, in particular in the East Mediterranean. The opportunity to pursue scientific education will be granted.

Requirements:
Ph.D. in plant sciences. Applicants must have completed or be near completion of the Ph.D. and must provide, in the latter case, proof of completion of the degree before the position begins.

Desirable:
Robust background in plant systematics with an understanding of collection-based research; deep interest and proven experience in molecular systematics (phylogenetics and species delimitation); affinity for the application of computing techniques in plant systematics; talent for teamwork; excellent communication and organisational skills; strong command of English (spoken and written).
Further information requested by Norbert Kilian (n.kilian at bgbm.org ).
