[Taxacom] multiple authors new species

This thread is getting a little bit confused. I was talking about citing references, not about citing taxonomic name authorities. For the latter, there are nomenclatural rules to be followed (possibly different between botanical and zoological codes?) You can't just cite authorities of taxonomic names however seems most "sensible" to you! You can however still use "et al." at one's discretion in most cases (except when a definite restriction of authorship is explicitly specified in the original reference).

It is also reasonable for the authorship of the name to be
restricted to those who provide the description and decide
its position and rank. It may or not be a group
decision.

Multiple authorship is getting ridiculous in some cases.
Just "et al" them all out (apart from the first)
for being such @#$%wits on a citation grab! At any rate, it
doesn't matter one bit how you cite a reference if it
has an identifier (like a doi). That's
the whole point of an identifier, i.e. so citation variants
can be linked to the same reference.

I have a feeling that if you use paper with multiple
authors for reference, is the best to cite all
authors.
If you use just for an identification label , use
"etal"

Better a punctuation error than substituting with the
'trendy' ... & al.

John,
It seems no-one has pointed out the punctuation error
- there is no '.'
after 'et', only after 'al'. Et is not an
abbreviation, unlike 'al', so does not
need a '.' after it.
The correct citation for the species should be
Thitarodes biruensis (Fu et al., 2002).
By the way, I see this is a Chinese Hepialid. I
remember last time I was in the BMNH in
2006(temporarily in Wandsworth at the time) I was
talking to my old friend Gaden Robinson (RIP) and he
was complaining about the new Hepialid volume of
Fauna Sinica
that had just arrived. It was full of synonyms
and taxonomic issues, and he was really frustrated
having just finished a revision of the family. He said
"If I had any hair left I would be pulling
it out right now".
Adam.
