It is unfortunate that other specialist "closed sites" still list the type species of Aellopos as valid! http://shark-references.com/species/view/Aellopos-elongata
This illustrates that we are entering a "brave new world" of multiple conflicting sources on the web, all of which have at least some claim (or so they make out) to be thought of as "reliable" ...

Hi Stephen,
In the IRMNG context at least,
the value of databasing the names (even
in
the absence of a modern taxonomic treatment) is in
documenting that
the name exists (for
example for present and avoidance of potential
future homonymy) and what is has been used for
(to assist in taxonomic
information
retrieval an/or disambiguation purposes.Additional
relevant information can then be collated as
available and attached to
the relevant
taxonomic name instance in the database, for display via
the web or disseminated via other means,
exactly asĀ we are doing
here. Putting the
information out into the public arena also permits
many more eyes to scrutinize what is there and
point to errors or
possible omissions
(thanks, Doug and John) which is a lot better than
just relying on a single point of scrutiny,
also has the potential to
bring in others
with relevant expertise with the potential for
continuous improvement of the content already
held.
I don't have a
problem with subjective synonyms being subjective, so
long as the source followed is clearly
indicated and there does not
seem to be
anything better to use...
Regards - Tony
