[Taxacom] IRMNG update

Tony and Doug,
Looking in more depth at the Aellopos/Spathobatis problem, it could be a whole lot more complicated! It is messy, as paleontological taxonomy often is. There is actually little that I can find to support the synonymy of the two generic names, except for the widespread usage of the combination Aellopos bugesiacus (Thiollière) as valid! This presumably refers to Spathobatis bugesiacus Thiollière, 1849 (presumably the valid name), though to make matters worse it is usually attributed to Thiollière, 1854! Aellopos Münster, 1836 appears to have been based by monotypy on Aellopos elongata/elongatus Münster, 1836, whose current status is entirely unclear to me at this stage!
Cheers,
Stephen

Hi Stephen
and Doug,
IRMNG has a component of presently
unreviewed genera (publication details known but taxonomic
status unresearched) which, sub-optimally, are presently
labelled "accepted" although they should say
"unresolved" (the Aphia system which supplies
these flags does not presently support the latter, although
it should...) As a workaround for now, for such names I
presently add a comment "Validity: Name as supplied in
source(s) stated in "basis of record" without
indication of present taxonomic status (i.e. valid name,
synonym or other)".
Thanks, Stephen, for the pointer
to the current valid name of Aellopos Muenster, 1836. I will
make the necessary change in IRMNG.
Regards - Tony

The junior homonym, Aellopos Muenster, 1836 (a fossil fish),
seems to have been replaced by the next oldest name in its
synonymy, i.e. Spathobatis Thiollière, 1849.
For some reason, I was having problems tracking that down.
Thanks. I see you commented on Wikipedia, but in this case,
the homonym needs to redirect readers to Spathobatis, which
already has a page.
Peace,
