[Taxacom] taxonomic names databases

The Wikipedia article that Mary refers to incorrectly cites the type species as Panthera pardus Linnaeus, 1758, but it should be cited as Felis pardus Linnaeus, 1758. I will see if I can get away with correcting it ...

 Hi Mary,

 According to McKenna &
Bell, "Classification of Mammals above the Species
Level", the author of the genus Panthera is Oken, 1816.
You can get the same information via IRMNG e.g. this
 search:

 http://www.irmng.org/aphia.php?p=taxlist&searchpar=0&tComp=equals&tName=Panthera&action=search

I agree, Catalogue of Life is
deficient in nomenclatural information at levels above
species (which qualifies my remark earlier about the
usefulness of downloading e.g. World Spider Catalog data via
that route if you are interested in information above
 species rank).

 Tony

A problem that I have with many of the
databases that I have used is that they ignore (or do not
reveal) the authors of names above the rank of species. I
find that Wikipedia is often the most useful resource in
this regard. For Panthera, even Wikipedia let me down.
From the comment that the genus was “was named and first
described by the German naturalist Oken<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorenz_Oken>
in 1816” and the fact that the citation for the type
species, Panthera pardus, is Linnaeus 1758 I think that the
author of Panthera should be given as (Linnaeus 1758) but I
wish CoL routinely provided such information.  I like CoL,
but the absence of author citations for higher ranks, IMO,
 lowers its value.

 And yes,
if someone would either correct my citation or confirm it, I
 would be grateful.
 Mary
