[Taxacom] taxonomic names databases

Hi José,

I hope you get some offers of assistance or advice with your Scratchpad
implemention, which already looks good.

Back in 1999 I wrote my first taxonomic database software / web display
package (for marine and freshwater species in Australia, "CAAB"
http://www.cmar.csiro.au/caab/) by hand... it is still running but does
look anything like as slick as Scratchpads, and lacks a lot of the
additional functionality that comes off-the-shelf with the latter (however
it does do some things our in-house users require that Scratchpads does
not...). If I were starting again today I would certainly look at the
Scratchpads model to see if it would do what we require, and/or could be
retrofitted with the necessary modifications (chiefly supporting numeric
code-based as well as name-based navigation). (The entire CAAB package is
due for an overhaul within the next few years but this will be carried out
by others, not be me...).

Actually I looked to see if the official Scratchpads site has a user forum
for specific technical questions and community/experts to answer, but did
not find one. Perhaps something to suggest to them!

Wishing you good luck,

Regards - Tony
