Looks to me like an segment of an appendage of an arthropod, perhaps a crustacean or aquatic insect larva.

Subject: [Taxacom] Help with identification

Dear Taxacomers,

is anyone out there able to comment/speculate on this object:
http://www.rotifera.hausdernatur.at/Rotifer_data/images/typescan/_full-size/Pteroessa%20surda%20Gosse,%201886.jpg ?

It has been described as a new genus of rotifer from British waters in 1886, unfortunately with no information on its habitat, other than ?Loch near Dundee?. Size of ?lorica? ca. 0,23 mm.

We rotiferologists have no clue what it could be, other than it is not a rotifer.
To start speculations, I thought it could be some sort of insect remains, e.g. the ?lorica? actually is a fragment of an insect leg?

If anyone is interested in more details of this description, it can be found here:

thanks in advance for any ideas and suggestions!

Christian
