Pardon me for not being explicit - "invited to be on the program" is 
what I meant, not "invited to attend". Even so, a posting to a mailing 
list saying "Anyone in the world can attend this meeting" is not exactly 
what most people would construe as an invitation (by that logic, we're 
all being invited to every public event, everywhere in the world, all 
the time). I would call this sort of thing an "advertisement" rather 
than an "invitation".
