Being online does not constitute publication unless the work fulfills the requirements of ICZN Code Article 8.5 <http://www.nhm.ac.uk/hosted-sites/iczn/code/> [in chapter 3], such as registration in ZooBank. If the thesis is not registered in ZooBank it does not need a disclaimer, although in principal the disclaimer is a good idea, since the work could also have been distributed on paper. Article 8.2 states that a work can be disclaimed, and Article 8.3 states that names and acts within a work can be disclaimed.

Subject: [Taxacom] Species descriptions in thesis
Dear Taxacomers,
I am describing a number of new species in my Ph.D. thesis, ahead of the peer-reviewed journal publication of the descriptions. However I would like the published paper to be the official description. Since my thesis will be online, and thus technically fulfill the requirements of the Code, I would like to include a statement that the descriptions therein are not the "real" species descriptions. I feel I've seen similar statements, but can't find any examples now that I'm looking for one. Does anyone have a suggestion for a standard statement that should be included?
Thanks in advance!
Marla
