I suppose I would be a non-professional. Even though I was hired 
originally as a "plant biosystematist", my primary responsibility has 
always been teaching, and no one ever cared what kind of research I did, 
as long as I did some of it. I think my situation is not unusual in US 
comprehensive universities.
