POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP

UNIVERSITY OF SAO PAULO, BIOSCIENCES INSTITUTE

DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY

The Plant Systematics Laboratory at the Department of Botany,  
University of São Paulo, seeks applicants at postdoctoral level with  
interest in plant systematics and phylogeny. This fellowship (24  
months) is part of a Thematic Grant (Fapesp 2010/51454-3) focused on  
the "Morphoanatomical, metabolomic and molecular studies as subsidies  
to the systematic of Asteraceae species and access to its  
pharmacological potential". The main objective of the fellowship is to  
investigate the "Phylogeny of South American species of Viguiera  
(Asteraceae: Heliantheae)". Postdoctoral candidates must have a recent  
(less than 5 years) Ph.D. in closely related field and have published  
some papers in peer-reviewed journals of English language. Skills in  
phylogenetic methods as well as experience in scientific writing are  
required.
1. REGISTRATION
Registration must take place by e-mail (pirani at usp.br) for the period  
01/12/2011 to 04/01/2012. All emails sent during business hours will  
receive a response to confirmed immediately via e-mail itself. E-mails  
sent outside office hours will be answered during business hours  
immediately following. Calls to the candidates who have not by chance  
that confirmation of registration to contact (55-11-30917595) for  
appropriate explanations.
2. VACANCY
Will be offered one (1) vacancy in the field of Plant Systematics to  
develop the proposal "Phylogeny of South American species of Viguiera  
(Asteraceae: Heliantheae)." The grantee will develop research projects  
and staff training, according to the proposal submitted. In general,  
the project's overall objective is to provide a phylogenetic  
hypothesis for species of South American Viguiera and relationships  
with related genera of Helianthinae based on molecular data,  
morphological and chemical.
3. REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CANDIDATE
The candidate to be included in the approved project and be benefited  
with a grant from FAPESP must meet the following requirements:
a) to be Brazilian or have a visa to stay in the country;
b) must be in compliance with the compulsory voting (except for  
foreign applicants);
c) have a curriculum that demonstrates capacity to contribute to the  
development of the project;
d) to devote themselves fully and exclusively to the project activities;
e) not having statutory or employment contract;
f) not be retired;
g) have obtained a doctorate degree within the last five (5) years;
h) be in possession of his doctoral degree. In case of diploma in  
foreign institution, it should have the recognition of a national  
validation, as a legal provision (except for foreign applicants);
i) have your resume updated (all applicants) and available in  
Brazilian ?Plataforma Lattes? (except for foreign applicants);
j) be able to initiate activities related to the project as soon as  
your application is approved by FAPESP.

4. DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED TO REGISTRATION
Upon registration by e-mail the applicant must submit:
a) Application Form (Annex I of this Notice) duly completed and  
attached to e-mail;
b) Justification for the grant application;
c) The candidate's curriculum.
d) Two letters from two referees to pirani at usp.br up to January 4,  
2012, highlighting the qualities and potential of the candidate. In  
the case of Brazilian candidates, professors or researchers from  
graduate courses recommended by CAPES.
5. SELECTION
The scholarship selection will be performed by pre-selection based on  
curriculum, which should be updated until the day January 4, 2012, in  
which applicants must submit scientific proven experience in the  
desired area. The curriculum will be evaluated by Dr. José Rubens  
Pirani. The pre-selected candidates will be contacted for interview,  
which can be personally or through Skype. Duration of the fellowship  
is 24 months. Be taken into account the transcripts of the Master and  
PhD, along with three recommendations for professors or researchers.  
In the case of Brazilian candidates, professors or researchers from  
graduate courses recommended by CAPES.

OBS. Candidates who do not submit all documents requested in item 4 of  
this notice will be disqualified.

6. RESULTS
The result will be available by phone (55-11-30917595) or by e-mail  
(pirani at usp.br), from 14 hours of the day January 9, 2012.

7. SCHOLARSHIP
The selected candidate will receive funding from FAPESP, being awarded  
a postdoctoral fellowship, lasting up to 24 months, assuming an  
extension depending on performance, for two further periods of up to  
12 months. Scholarships linked to thematic projects, the maximum  
duration of the scholarship can reach 48 months, the current  
scholarship is R$ 5.333,40 (about US $ 3335) free of taxes.
8. THE START OF THE ACTIVITIES
The selected candidate should be able to initiate activities related  
to the project as soon as your application is approved by FAPESP.
