Hi Claus,
I have a database "IRMNG" which allows you to do fuzzy matches on "most" genera of animals, plants, etc. and perhaps 50% of species names. For example try this:
http://www.marine.csiro.au/mirrorsearch/ir_search.go?searchtxt=Halicyoides+mamus&hlevel=species
Of course the species level results will certainly be incomplete, but the genus level information should have a more likely chance of showing lexically similar names (except that for some short names the only a subset of similar matches are shown to prevent the list getting too long).
I had less success with Cenis uhleri or Cateres pennatus via this method since, in contrast to the example above, there are already some quite close genus matches (and a different logic for displaying the results, I should probably standardize...); however for these you can force the system to do a fuzzy match on species alone by entering an unrecognizable genus e.g. "xx+uhleri" and see what you get.
You can also enter just an epithet or just a genus for an exact match into the global names index, http://gni.globalnames.org/ , which has a lot more species than IRMNG, and see what looks similar in the other component, however there may be a lot of results to scroll through.
Let me know if you have any success,
Regards
Tony Rees, Hobart

Subject: [Taxacom] Cateres pennatus and Halicyoides mamus
Hello all,
In an important pollinator paper from 1923 (Clements, F.E. & Long, F.L. (1923) Experimental pollination, an outline of the ecology of flowers and insects. Carneige institution), several US insect names were apparently misspelled. I have figured out all but these two and wonder if anyone here can help decipher correct names so I can get the order, family or maybe even current genus:
Cateres pennatus
Halicyoides mamus
As an example of the tricky spelling the "Cenis uhleri" listed in the book is in fact Oeneis uhleri.
Thanks in advance and seasons greetings,
Claus Rasmussen, Ph.D.
