[Taxacom] Question about herbarium management

That's a great reply, Pete -- something we deal with regularly for bamboo and other "bulky" specimens!
I have fairly frequently loaded archival (25% cotton, pH-buffered) paper into our photocopier and copied labels as needed (either for extras or if the original label doesn't seem to be archival quality). But I've wondered whether our photocopier and others consistently use archival quality toners. Can someone help with this?
Thanks!

Dear Vicinius
Sometimes a single herbarium sheet is not adequate to represent a specimen of larger plants (e.g. palm species, but also many others), and it is common practice to retain 2 or more sheets of a single collection with the different representative parts of the specimen mounted on separate sheets, each with a copy of the same collection label, and usually with each sheet marked as: Sheet 1 of 2, 2 of 2, or 1 of 3, 2 of 3 .... etc. I am thinking that this may be why you were send this voluminous material, and you might want to consider this approach.
If this is not the case, then you might want to contact the sending institution, perhaps the extra material was sent in error, or if not and you decide to send it on to another institution, the sending institution might like to correct there records - it is always good to know where duplicate material has been sent, so much of this information is now databased and it is good if this is updated, at Missouri Botanical Garden we are certainly interested to know where duplicates of our collections ends up.

Subject: [Taxacom] Question about herbarium management
Dear all,
I'm curator of the CESJ herbarium, and I've a question concerning
duplicates: in some instances we receive duplicates from other herbaria that are voluminous (e.g., with two big specimens that doesn't fit in just one sheet). In these cases, I think the best thing to do would be sending one of those specimens to other herbaria, but these specimens are not from CESJ. Is it advisable sending specimens to other herbaria that are not from our institution? And (if the answer to the first question is "yes"): how to manage this properly? (*e.g.*, what I'm supposed to do with the label? - making a copy of it for sending would be good?). Any clues are welcome.
Best wishes,
Vin?cius
