sorry by cross-posting
Moacyr Alvarenga passed away on July 20th, aged 95 (almost 96). For those
who didn't have the chance to meet him, Alvarenga was a specialist in the
Erotylidae (having published a catalog of the Neotropical species of this
family, and several taxonomic papers), but also worked on other beetles, for
instance, he published two papers on Scarabaeoids. He was by far the most
prolific collector of Coleoptera (and other insects) in Brazil, with most of
his trips conducted from the 50's to the early 80's, and with specimens
collected by him distributed all around the world. More than a hundred new
insect species were named after him, apart of other invertebrates, at least
one Amphibian, and one tree; as are also at least 7 zoological genera (*
Alvarenga* Carrera - Diptera; *Alvarengaia* Rocha e Silva e Aguiar -
Orthoptera; *Alvarengamiris* Carvalho - Heteroptera; *Alvarenganiella *Viana
& Martínez, *Alvarengius* Frey and *Besourenga* Vaz-de-Mello - Coleoptera; *
Moaciria* Teixeira de Freitas - Nematoda). Most of his collection was
incorporated to the Coleção Entomológica Pe. Jesus Santiago Moure,
Departamento de Zoologia, Universidade Federal do Paraná (Curitiba), and
some specimens are also found in Museu Nacional, Universidade Federal do Rio
de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro). Alvarenga was a bright and lively friend, and
had enormous quantities of field and museum anecdotes of people he knew. We
already miss him a lot.

IMPORTANT WARNING: When sending specimens to our museum, under no
circumstances use a private courier (UPS, Fedex, DHL, etc.). The material
must be sent by regular postal service only. In Brazil, the private couriers
have been under closer scrutiny by regulatory Federal agencies. These
agencies too frequently have, without justification, temporarily retained
(and worse, even destroyed) inert biological samples sent for scientific
studies.
