I live and work in Denali National Park, AK. The NPS,
based on a recent small mammal survey, has just added
the meadow jumping mouse to the mammal list. The
literature indicates that this species is a
hibernator, unlike any other small mammal in this
area. The genera Lemmus, Microtus, Clethrionomys, as
well as all the Insectivora stay active in the
subnivean realm. Other than this species, the smallest
hibernator is the Arctic Ground Squirrel
(Spermophilus). Does anyone have any idea how this
small, very long-tailed rodent survives winters at
this latitude. Thanks, Alan Seegert <zemmo at yahoo.com>
