LEVYNS' FLORA OF THE SOUTH WESTERN CAPE

PRE-PUBLICATION NOTICE.

A comprehensive guide to the rich and diverse flora of the south western
corner of the Cape Floral Kingdom is to be published in August 2003 in the
series: Contributions from the Bolus Herbarium  (Vol. 21). The area covered
by the book (which includes two of the six phytogeographic centres), is
within one day's travel from  Cape Town and boasts 87% of the indigenous
families and 78% of the indigenous genera found within the boundaries of the
Kingdom.

The publication is intended to facilitate the identification of indigenous
and exotic plants found in this area to the level of family and genus.
Included are: 
1) A comprehensive glossary with plates illustrating some of the terms used
2) A key to the 40 fern genera and a description of each genus.
3) Keys to the 132 gymnosperm and angiosperm families (3 exotic), together
with a description of each family.  The majority are accompanied by labelled
illustrations highlighting the key characters.
4) Keys to all 860 genera (136 exotic) with a description of the generic
characters, their distribution within the area, number of species, habitat
preferences and flowering time. Where applicable, vernacular names have been
included.
