Dear Doug and others,

What you have received is a "canned response" that our "thoughtful"
chancellor is sending out to all of those who are writing support
letters for our museum.

We greatly appreciate all the letters that are rolling in to the
administrators.  I hope that it will help sway their resolve on this
issue over the next couple of months when all of the final decisions
are made.  I forwarded below a modified strategy we are encouraging
for support letters.  I have also included addresses for many of the
state politicians who need to hear your messages as well.  The
politicians need to be educated about the value and significance of
the research at the University of Nebraska State Museum (I am quite
sure that they know nothing about what goes on here).  Please copy
Brett Ratcliffe <bratcliffe1 at unl.edu> or I on support letter you are
sending so we know what is going on.

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the scarab team I'd like to thank you all for your
messages of support and protest. Unfortunately the University of
Nebraska administrators are now sending out a form letter
(boilerplate) of response. Thanks to Nathan Schiff for suggesting
that we are now at the stage at which letters should be addressed to
Nebraskan politicians (see addresses below).

So what makes the most telling point ? International obligations
(despite today's black news) and the international reputation of the
researchers and their collections.  Inability to switch the resource
back on when its needed. The fate of the collections, and continued
access.

Brett feels that there is hope yet - let's keep the pressure on the
administrators, from their elected representatives now. If you've
already written to the adminisiration,  now send it on to the
politicians.
