Fwd: diagrams Cyperaceae

Clarke (1909) has one plate of Carex (Tab CXLIV) that intriguingly shows
two TS sections the fruit and perigynium of Carex atrata. One with the
medio-anterior rib to glume and the other with the medio-anterior rib to
the axis, indicating that this species is polymorphic for the character.

So, I had a quick look at a few specimens in NE, and found, from a paltry
sample of four species that most had the medio-anterior rib to the glume
(this is as I expected; e.g. C. blakei). However, in Carex fascicularis,
the nuts seem to be consistently (again, as far as a small sample allows
one to say that) with the medio-anterior rib to the axis! In the last case,
the fruiting axis does not seem to be twisted (but there is a nice little
developmental project).

Those familiar with Carex will also know that carpel/style/fruit shape in
TS is variable in the genus, with stigmas and carpels 2-3.

By the way, I have scanned Clarke 1909 and I am in the process of
incorporating those and other images into a revised version of the INTKEY
data set "Sedge genera of the World", ready I hope for Monocots III. I also
plan to make those images available on the web after the meeting.

Cheers
Jeremy
