Some people have told me that they were unable to download some of the
files from the Web site given. With the help of the IT folks here, I
have set up an alternative mechanism for obtaining the files - one that
uses FTP. Go to http://www.biology.usu.edu/ Select IT Resources, and
then U drive access. User name is "bhod", password is "visitor" [case
sensitive, omit the quotes]. This combination will permit you to
download the files from the site. default.htm contains information
about corrections and amendments that do not require downloads. It is
the page that opens up when you go to
http://herbarium.usu.edu/grassmanual/fna25/
We shall begin placing individual treatments on the Web next week. These
contain the amendments and corrections that have been brought to my
attention so are not absolutely identical to the content of the
published volumes. There are not many of these changes, but it would be
foolish not to have the Web site reflect those that we are aware of.
The illustrations are already on the Web site, as are the maps. The maps
have been regenerated at least once since the publication date.
We have been able to keep going through this month and I think we have
enough money for September. The ARS-Forage and Range Laboratory has
agreed to purchase two herbarium cases for us so that we can start
organizing specimens for illustration (they are also useful in editing)
and the Flora of North America Association provided us with an
additional $7000 which will enable us to keep going for slightly more
than a month. We have not yet received a commitment from any of the US
federal agencies concerning further support although we have been
promised some. Their problem is that there has been a major change in
the federal government's priorities and, probably partly for this
reason, the budget process is taking an inordinately long time this
year. Oddly enough, the university will not allow me to contract to pay
anyone in the absence of a clear statement that the money will be
forthcoming from some source. Well, they would - if I would promise to
cover any unreimbursed costs out of my pocket if they were convinced
that my pockets were deep enough; they are not.
Many people who received complimentary copies were kind enough to
reimburse us for the actual cost of the copy; some made a donation over
and above the cost of the copy. We do thank you. It is part of why we
can keep going through September. I have not written individual thank
you letters because I figure everyone wants the next volume out. Without
the financial support that we need, I cannot say when that will be but
we are working hard on it.
