Dear TAXACOMERS:

Help wanted: I?m currently preparing a little paper on a Caryophyllaceae
species from Ile Saint Paul (southern Indian Ocean). This species
description is based on two specimens, one collected by G. Staunton (BM)
and the other one by Alexander J. Smith. Lieut. A.J. Smith was a member
of the Ross' 1839-1843 Antarctic expedition. Specimens attributed to him
as collected in St. Paul Isl. show up more than once in J.D.
Hooker?s ?Flora Antarctica? as well as the botanical reports of
the ?Challenger? expedition. What I?m trying to figure out is exactly
when A.J. Smith visited St. Paul Is. and under what expedition. What I
know so far is that a year after the return of the Ross? expedition (that
is, 1844) Smith moved to Tasmania as director of the Hobart Observatory.
Therefore, he must have visited the island sometime that year (Fl.
Antarctica was published in 1845). Any suggestion? Thanks for the help!
