In Russian, "nine brothers" (devyat bratyev) is the old name for the
field or yellow hawkweed, in English also called King Devil (Hieracium
pratense), fam. Asteraceacae.

Ref.: V. I. Dahl. 1880-1882. The Interpretative Dictionary of the Live
Great Russian Language. Online: http://vidahl.agava.ru

"King Devil and other European hawkweeds were used as an herbal remedy
for healing eyesight.
Pliny reported, in ancient Greece, that hawks ate it to see better.",
