NSF Grants: Tree of Life

A year before the U.S. NSF Assembling the Tree of Life competition, under
the Biocomplexity in the Environment competition, four awards were made for
large-scale Tree of Life studies, including DEB 0120635 (to Cunningham,
Martin, Regier, Thorne, and Shultz) for "Deep Arthropod Phylogeny from 100
Targeted Nuclear-Coding Sequences" and including crustaceans in the taxon
sampling. The three other Tree of Life awards made through that 2001
competition are: DEB 0120709 (plants), EAR 0120646 (annelids), and DEB
0120718 (hexapods). Award abstracts are posted on the NSF website
(www.nsf.gov).
        Sincerely,
        James Rodman

Subject: NSF Grants: Tree of Life

Dear All,
I was just looking at NSF's 2002 Grant Awards for ATOL (Assembling the
Tree Of Life). It looks like a very good mix and broad coverage of various
parts of the Tree of Life.
However, for some reason there is nothing for molluscs. Hopefully they
can cover the malacological gap by an award in 2003. And a project on
crustacean phylogeny would also be useful. Anyway, a link to the 2002 Grant
Awards is given below.
           ---- Cheers,
                   Ken Kinman
