Regarding your Message on RootsWeb.com dated Friday, Nov. 22 1996,
subject WISLIZENUS :
Dr. F. A. Wislizenus was my maternal great-Grandfather.
According to records left by my grandmother, Mary Claire Alterton
Wislizenus, the Wislizenus family name was changed from Wisliczky to
Wislizenus by Christian, son of Nicolaus Wisliczky, born in 1668. The
records indicate that the family moved from Poland to Germany (to
Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, before unification of Germany), about 1570.
He was a physician, not a botanist, but he was also an explorer of
the American West, with a partner, Dr. George Englemann, who was both
a physician and a botanist. During Wislizenus' travels he gathered
specimens which he sent or brought back to Englemann, some of which
were named for Wislizenus. Many others bear the name of Englemann.
There are many plants in the American West bearing those names.
He wrote two books about his travels, one of which is reproduced
verbatim at the following site:

Comme le dit le proverbe fran?ais :
? Tout vient ? point ? qui sait attendre. ?
polonais ? Wisliczky ?.
