Entrez Taxonomy LinkOut

The NCBI maintains a variety of databases and resources
(GenBank, PubMed, OMIM, &c.) that are all tied together
in a uniform indexing and retrieval system (Entrez).

The LinkOut program was originally developed in the
PubMed domain of Entrez in order to allow journal
publishers to maintain hotlinks from our PubMed abstract
pages in Entrez back to the full text of the corresponding
articles on their web sites. This application has grown
to include libraries, document delivery services, and a
wide range of bibliographic resource providers.

For the past several years, I have been working to develop
the non-bibliographic applications of LinkOut, particularly
in the taxonomy and sequence domains of Entrez. Several of
the model organism databases are now using LinkOut to maintain
hotlinks from our sequence entries to their curated gene entries
(FlyBase, WormBase, SGD, &c.) In the taxonomy domain there are
several different kinds of resource providers with robust sets
of LinkOut links in Entrez (FishBase, Amphibian Species of the
World, Bacterial Nomenclature Up-To-Date, CalPhotos, Featured
Creatures &c.)
