Conventions for common names?

Hi folks -

Are there any guidelines or "rules of thumb" for establishing common names
for organisms that heretofore are known only by their scientific names?

My question is motivated by entomopathogenic nematodes.  The nematodes can
be used effectively as biological control agents of insect pests, but it is
thought that the use of scientific names by extension agents and growers is
awkward, and that using common names would ease or expand expand their
adoption.

I'm guessing that this process usually occurs the other way around and I
would be interested in hearing any suggestions, especially those based on
hindsight.
