BIOTIC SURVEYS AND INVENTORIES (BS&I)
New Program Announcement: NSF 01-150
U.S. NSF/BIO/Division of Environmental Biology (DEB)
The Biotic Surveys and Inventories Program supports basic research
and collecting activities that are designed to discover and document the
biological species diversity of all forms of life on Earth. The program
supports collecting, identifying, vouchering, and naming the biota of a
substantial geographic region, including oceanographic areas, as well as
expeditionary work to discover and describe biotic diversity in poorly known
areas. Research projects may address any major group or groups of organisms,
from terrestrial, freshwater, and marine environments, usually at landscape
to regional scales or larger. Permanent, well-curated collections or
cultures and web-accessible databases of information are expected as
products of BS&I support.
Proposals should address in detail issues related to Taxonomic
Breadth of the survey or inventory; Geographic Scale; Urgency (if
applicable); Conceptual Issues (scientific questions likely to be answered
with the collections and data obtained); and Management. NSF anticipates
making 20-25 awards each Fiscal Year, contingent upon the availability of
funds and quality of proposals received. Abstracts of recent awards are
available on the NSF FastLane award abstract site.
Proposals must be submitted via the FastLane system for the November
16, 2001 deadline; please note the requirement for full electronic
submission through FastLane. Information about the BS&I program and the
announcement are available from the NSF website (www.nsf.gov).
